Insidious (2010)
Director: James Wan
Starring: Patrick Wilson, Rose Byrne, Ty Simpkins
Format: Cinema
From the people who brought you Saw and Paranormal Activity...Blurbs like this always worry the shit outta me as it sets up a level of expectancy that is usually hard to follow. Saw was a great horror movie followed by some decent sequels. Paranormal Activity was ok. Some shocking scenes but not enough for me to leave me mentally scarred.
Trying to forget about the makers previous efforts is quite easy as this is miles away from Saw. If anything the movie almost feels like a sequel to The Entity. There are even a few moments when I was expecting the movie to become an official sequel due to the appearance of said films star Barbara Hersey who goes on to admit that these spooky occurances happened to her before!!
The movie is basically a haunting story following the lives of a couple who are caring for their comatose son in their new home. Unbeknownst to them their son is not comatose, he's becoming possessed by demons.
I've already mentioned the entity but you would be forgiven if you mention Poltergeist as a huge influence on this but to be fair the movie has enough original ideas for it to stand alone.
This movie left me feeling very uncomfortable. I've always had trouble dealing with horror movies when there are kids involved. It disturbs the hell out of me so when one of the movies first main scares involves a baby monitor, a baby and a demon that left me feeling very nervous about what was lurking behind every other fucking door for the rest of the film.
The acting and direction were top notch. Writing was also very natural with some humour thrown in there for relief but not overwhelming. As I said before, the story, although on the outside seems very generic for this type of movie is original once more about the kids condition is revealed.
It's a surprisingly scary/jumpy movie. No gore but some creepy and affective FX. My only complaint is that the main demon was a dead(sorry!!) ringer for Darth Maul which was slightly distracting.
Rating: 8/10 Did what it's supposed to-scared the shit outta me.
