News that the Big 4 of thrash metal...that's Slayer, Metallica, Anthrax and Megadeth..are coming to Europe is causing great excitement in my pants. Now no Irish date has yet been confirmed or rumoured but already there are 2 dates in Germany and Italy confirmed.
I've seen all the above bands back in the day with differing experiences..
Slayer. Saw them first 12 September 1988(see how memorable that one is!) Supported by the wonderful Nuclear Assault in the Top Hat Dunlaoighre this was one of the greatest Metal gigs ever. South of Heaven was out and they fucking killed that night.
I've seen them in the Ambassador in Dublin in recent years and they were as tight as a duck's arse in a snow storm. Also in the Point depot with the Unholy alliance tour.Plus another Point date.
Metallica I also saw in 1988 (October) in the Top Hat with Danzig supporting. This was the Justice tour and they were fuckin amazing. Then I saw them in the Point after the Black album and they committed the greatest sin known to fans of Kill Em All. They played a fucking medley of early songs. You are Metallica not Fucking Jive bunny. And that my friends was that for me and Metallica. I still love the first 4 albums(and some of the 5th) but that's it. DONE
Anthrax were the first thrash metal band I got into. I was obsessed with the album Among the living. Spreading the disease was awesome too. I love the Judge Dredd and horror references, I loved the riffs and tempo changes. I was well and truly caught in a mosh. Then I went to see them in the Top Hat and some CUNT kept spitting at them resulting in Scott Ian almost jumping into the crowd to kill him. He was warned and warned but he kept it up and they walked off. People were pissed but how can anyone blame them. I'd smash their face in if someone spat at me. So that was that. State of Euphoria was ok but Persistance of time was a great album but Anthrax kind of dissapeared when Belladonna left. He's back now so I'd love to see them again.
Megadeth are a strange one. The Ego of Dave Mustaine is huge but he writes damn fine technically brilliant thrash metal so the talent cannot be denied. I've seen them twice supported by Alice in Chains, Wolfsbane and the almighty...I think, it's a bit hazy. They were good live but not to the Slayer standard. Peace sells, So far and Rust in peace are great albums though and still stand up today.
