Slayer
Kerry King live in Dublin
Without doubt Slayer are the greatest Thrash Metal bands.
What makes them stand out from their rivals is that they never sold out, never wimped out and never did FUCKING MEDALIES. But enough about metallica.
If you haven't got any slayer I suggest getting Show no Mercy and Hell Awaits together. Show No Mercy is a classic black metal album. The band's influence of Venom is clear to hear. The songs are short and nasty and lyrically they all originate in Hell.
Best tracks: Die by the sword, The Antichrist, Black Magic
Hell Awaits sounds like the band had spent a few years in Hell hanging out with Satan and letting him tune their guitars. From the first noise of the title track you know you're neck deep in the dark shit. The songs are long, with riffs that would slice open your throat, a lyric sheet that would burn on holy ground and a rythm section to loosen any constipated bowels this for me is the birth of Slayer.
Best tracks: Hell Awaits, At dawn they sleep, Necrophiliac
Reign in Blood follows, which even today is still hailed as the greatest Thrash album of all time, and who can argue. This is like a kick in the face with steel toe boots. The whole album clocks in at less than half and hour and even that shows the power of this short sharp shock. The drumming of Dave Lombardo is akin to an octopus having a seizure, Tom Araya was obviously possessed by the devil when he screamed his vocals and guitar team Kerry King and Jeff Hanneman are totally in sync with eachother and Satan himself.
Best tracks: Angel of Death, Altar of sacrifice, Postmortem
The pressure of following RIB was immense from the press but the band publically announced that it would be impossible to outdo Reign in Blood so they mixed the fast with the slower songs on South of Heaven. The album was a critical success and further pushed the band into mainstream audiences without losing their edge. The songs show a maturity and yet prove that they do in fact hold the gift of writing the perfect thrash metal song. Thumping riffs, lyrics that cover more social issues and even singing! Well not singing but maybe less screaching!
South of Heaven, Behind the crooked cross, Cleanse the soul
Seasons in the abyss is a weaker effort but not a bad album by any accounts. Its probably just a little too similar to South of Heaven and that is probably the reason it doesn't stand out as much as their previous efforts. Don't get me wrong, it's a great album with some fantastic and powerful songs it's just not a progression to SOH.
Hallowed point, War ensemble, Dead skin mask
